Calallen is a district located in the northwest part of the city of Corpus Christi with a population of about 14K. Calallen has an exception livability rating with crime rates significantly lower than the Corpus Christi average. The real estate prices are higher than the Corpus average, yet the cost of living is on par. The median household income is 47% higher than the US average.
It was named for Calvin Allen, who donated land for the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. A nearby Nueces River dam is named Calallen Dam. The Calallen community received a post office in 1908 with Ira D. Magee as the first postmaster. The post office was discontinued sometime after 1960. In 1914 the town had 150 residents and nine businesses. Its population dwindled to twenty-five by 1925 but reached 100 in 1939; it was 270 by 1965. And by 1966, joined the City of Corpus Christi.
Calallen has its own independent school district and its schools are rated excellent. Locally owned restaurants, cafes and businesses are the scene in this neck of the woods. The locals say that they are pet friendly, a car is needed, yards are well-kept, parking is easy and there are plenty of sidewalks. Wal-Mart is the local grocery store.
